Travel Guides
Short descriptions of Montenegro appear in four of Lonely Planet's regional guides listed in the Overview section: Europe on a Shoestring, Eastern Europe, Mediterranean Europe, and Western Balkans. Naturally the last of these includes the most detail.

Montenegro - The Bradt Travel Guide (3rd edition published March 2008) - Annalise RellieThis is the only detailed general guide to Montenegro in English that I am aware of. The first edition seemed to be aimed at a rather different market than Bradt's other guides to the region, lacking some of the practical information required by independent travellers. However I believe there have been significant changes in subsequent editions. The third edition includes a section on excursions outside Montenegro's borders. I can't resist adding a personal note: the photo of Kotor on the front cover was taken by ... me. |

The Mountains of Montenegro - Cicerone Guide (1st edition published June 2007) - Rudolf AbrahamMontenegro has great potential for walking and trekking, but until recently it has been frustratingly different to find information in English about the country's mountains. This guide aims to fill the gap, with descriptions of hiking trails in Durmitor, Orjen, Prokletije, and a number of other mountain ranges. A few one-day hikes are included, but the focus of the book is on longer treks for which you will need to carry a tent. |

Background Reading
My reading so far hasn't included any books specifically about Montenegro, but several of the works on Balkan history listed in the Overview may be of interest. There are reasonably substantial sections on Montenegro in several books dealing with the former Yugoslavia, including Through the Embers of Chaos and Black Lamb and Grey Falcon. Wild Europe includes interesting material about the romantic portrayal of the Montenegrins by some travellers.
